In 1906, Elgar was busy working on his great oratorio, The Kingdom, the sequel to The Apostles of 1903. Elgar then married Caroline Alice Roberts, one of his piano students against the wishes of her family: she was the daughter of a retired army general. Take a couple of minutes to relax and listen, when you can -- you won't be sorry. For most of these, the orchestra was the LSO, but the Variations were played by the Royal Albert Hall Orchestra. Stockley had invited him to conduct the piece, but, as Stockley later recalled, "he declined, and, further, insisted upon playing in his place in the orchestra.

Popular music was influenced by new American jazz. For instance, one measure after Rehearsal 56 the violas play alternating sixths as an accompaniment figure to the Mendelssohn fragments to portray the soothing undulations of the sea. Is it the soul of a lady-love (not necessarily Elgar’s wife), of the composer, the violin, of music itself? In the opera the singers are wild warriors. He also stated that the theme itself was.a counterpoint to a familiar tune, but the concealed subject was never discovered; various guesses were advanced in the musical press from time to time; a contest for the most plausible answer to the riddle was launched in America by the Saturday Review (1953), with dubious results.

Since it is dormant in 13 measures (341, 349-350, 356, 361-364, 368-372), the covert Theme plays over virtually 70% of the movement. Part of the enduring lure of this music is the intellectual game of trying to guess the riddles that it hides. This work, highly esteemed by Hans Richter, who conducted the first performance in 1899, brought Elgar recognition as a leading composer and became his most frequently performed composition. But the mysterious Mrs Nelson, on the evidence we have, has as strong a claim as these.
