He chose Samarqand—in present-day Uzbekistan—as his capital and established the Timurid dynasty, which reigned until 1506. This exhibition highlights SFMOMA's considerable collection of Japanese photography, focusing on generous gifts from our community and the important donation of the Kurenboh Collection, Tokyo. Although John Harrison is credited with creating the initial marine timekeeper, it is watchmaker John Arnold who perfected and simplified the design and proving beyond a doubt that an accurate timekeeper could be made for use at sea.

To deepen the experience of visual contemplation, the photographs are paired with short pieces of text – both poetry and prose – that invite visitors into a space of rumination. Shot in Taos, New Mexico, where Hopper was based following the production of Easy Rider in the late 60s, the series was taken with disposable cameras and developed in drugstore photo labs.

Many figure painters and portraitists began using the new medium of photography in addition to models, to reduce sitting-time.
